Abstract: Shifting population demographics and migration change the health landscape of countries. How should policy makers and public health practitioners be preparing and responding? This talk will offer global experience and dynamic reflections connecting this topic to implications for Hong Kong and surrounding areas.
About the Speaker:
Professor Thomas A. LaVeist is a distinguished authority in the field of public health, currently holding the esteemed position of Dean at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine of Tulane University. He is also the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health. His research primarily focuses on the social and behavioral determinants of health outcomes. Professor LaVeist is particularly interested in the health disparities between various ethnicities and the impact of social policy on the quality of life for African Americans. His goal is to create a guiding framework for policies and interventions to address these disparities. Additionally, Professor LaVeist holds the respected Weatherhead Presidential Chair in Health Equity.
Professor LaVeist continues to be a leading voice in public health, advocating for policies that promote health equity and reduce disparities. His work is known for its qualitative and quantitative analysis, contributing substantially to the understanding of social and behavioral factors that predict health outcomes, particularly in relation to race disparities.
In terms of public service, Professor LaVeist co-chaired the Louisiana COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force in 2020 and served as an at-large member of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health Board of Directors in 2019. His outstanding work in the field of health equity has also earned him several awards, including the Watkins-Saunders Award from the American Health Association/Baltimore in 2019 and the Population Health Award from the National Association of Health Services Executives in 2016. He became a Senior Fellow at the W. Montague Cobb/National Medical Association Health Institute in 2012.
Professor LaVeist has achieved an illustrious academic background, completing his Postdoctoral Fellowship in Gerontology and Public Health Policy, as well as his PhD and MA in Medical Sociology at the University of Michigan. He also holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
