About the Speaker:

Prof. Benjamin Horton is the Dean of the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong. He is an interdisciplinary scientist and educator. He has been employed in Geography, Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences, and Engineering academic units in the UK, United States and Asia. He has held three leadership positions as Chair, Director and Dean.


Prof. Horton’s  research has taken him to all seven continents, including Antarctica. For research, he has won several research awards from Asia–Oceania Geosciences Society, European Geosciences Union, American Geophysical Union, and Geological Society of America. He was an editor for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report and author of the Firth Assessment Report and a contributor to the Conference of Parties (COP) 26. He is the Principal Investigator of a Project within the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.


Prof. Horton has published over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Science, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, books and edited volumes. 22 of his graduate students or postdocs have full-time academic positions. His h-index is 92 and he has >24,000 citations . He has received over $US55 million of personal research funding and raised over $US5 million in philanthropic donations.
